What costs can workers’ compensation benefits help cover?

Few life events have the potential to be scarier than sustaining a work-related injury. After all, not only are many on-the-job injuries extremely painful, but they often make working and supporting a family virtually impossible. Fortunately, you may be eligible for workers’ compensation benefits to help you manage the consequences of your injury.

Massachusetts offers a few different types of workers’ compensation benefits to injured workers. Which level of benefits you receive depends both on the nature and duration of your injury and your inability to work. Nevertheless, workers’ compensation benefits in the Bay State usually cover critical expenses.

Medical care

Injured workers typically receive benefits to cover necessary and reasonable medical care. If you qualify for benefits, you should be able to receive treatment and medication for your injury. You also do not have to worry about paying copays or deductibles, as workers’ compensation benefits typically cover these otherwise out-of-pocket expenses.

Wage replacement

Workers’ compensation benefits often include wage replacement. With wage replacement, you receive a percentage of your salary to help you pay living expenses. Wage replacement benefits may be temporary or permanent.

Vocation rehabilitation

If your injury makes it difficult or impossible to return to your job, workers’ compensation benefits may cover up to two years of vocational rehabilitation. This rehabilitation, which may include job training, helps you find work you can do despite your injury.

Death benefits

If a work-related injury leads to your death, your dependents may receive death benefits. These may include compensation for your lost wages and reasonable funeral expenses.

While the workers’ compensation system in Massachusetts offers broad benefits to injured workers, receiving benefits is not always easy. Ultimately, you may need to fight aggressively for the workers’ compensation benefits you deserve.
